PM forgot promises made to sugarcane farmers, says Congress

New Delhi, Mar 29 (UNI) Hitting out at Prime Minister Narendra Modi for making fun of the ‘NYAY’ scheme and taking the Sarab swipe at the opposition alliance in Uttar Pradesh involving SP, BSP and other parties, the Congress on Thursday said that the PM was indulging in ‘theatrics’ in name of campaigning.

The party demanded that the PM apologise to the country for using the word ‘Sarab’ for opposition parties in Uttar Pradesh and making fun of the ‘NYAY’ scheme.

Taking a dig at PM, AICC media incharge Randeep Surjewala, referring to the promise made regarding pay back of dues of the sugarcane farmers in the same place in February 2017, said,’’back in 2017 , the PM promised the farmers of Uttar Pradesh that their dues will be paid in 14 days . However, on Thursday he forgot the same promise and made fun of the Nyay scheme.’’

Mr Surjewala said that total amount due to such farmers in the country was upto Rs 20 thousand crore.

He further said that PM objecting to a scheme like Nyay itself explains what actually he has in store for the poor.

The Congress leader further said that the PM has also put an end to the subsidy given to the farmers when the government bought sugar from them.

Addressing reporters here, Mr. Surjewala accused PM Modi of “theatrics and drama” in the name of campaigning.

He further added that PM Modi owes Congress and other opposition parties an apology for all the offensive and false statements he made against them.

“The Prime Minister has taken the political discourse to a new low. He should apologise for comparing the opposition parties with liquor. This is not a language that behoves the dignity of the post of PM. He should also apologise for making fun of the NYAY scheme, which is meant to benefit the poorest 20 per cent people in the country. By making fun of the scheme he has insulted the poor people in the country,’’Mr Surjewala said.

Addressing a rally at Meerut, the PM, referring to the NYAY scheme proposed by the Congress president, said,’’ from Nehru and Indira Gandhi’s time you hear them talk about Gareebi hatao, even today, after generations have passed, you see the Congress still make the same false promises to mislead you.

Mr Surjewala said that such behaviour does not suit a PM adding that he was behaving like a flop actor of a flop movie who throws such acronyms.

Replying to a question over grand old party’s alliances , Mr Surjewala said that their alliances were intact wherever they are being made in the states like Bihar , Kerala , Tamil Nadu , Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan and others.

On Uttar Pradesh, he said that the party will fight elections alone there. On Delhi, however, he said that a decision on the alliances is yet to be made. He said that the Congress will fight in UP on its own and was not left behind in campaigning.

Mr Surjewala said that the NYAY scheme announced by the Congress president, under which the poorest 20 per cent families of the country will be given Rs 72000 per annum , was finding resonance among the people of the country.

‘’NYAY is finding resonance everywhere. The scheme is finding resonance among alliances of the Congress. It is also finding resonance among the allies of the Government,’’Mr Surjewala said. Though there is a lot still to be done, we have taken few initiatives to eradicate poverty and have already implemented them. More needs to be done, but at least now you know who has done and who have mislead you in the past..’’

Taking a swipe at the NYAY scheme, the PM said,’’people who couldn’t open bank accounts are now saying that they will directly transfer money to the poor, what will they possibily do?” The PM said the 2019 election is the fight between dumdaar BJP and daagdaar opposition.
