Tiruchi: The state government has fixed the maximum price of the sugarcane to be procured from cane farmers on the eve of Pongal to distribute as hampers through PDS at Rs 33 a piece which is 10% more than that of last year. According to the government order only panner karumbu or senkarumbu having a height of six feet would be procured.
The cane will be directly procured from farmers without the involvement of middlemen and the full-length cane with leaves would be distributed to the beneficiaries.
According to the news report published in The New Indian Express, the farmers have stated that the govt has issued guidelines at the eleventh hour unlike last year when authorities had inspected their fields much earlier.
