Priyanka Gandhi slams Yogi government over sugarcane farmer’s suicide

New Delhi: Congress General Secretary Priyanka Gandhi has alleged that the Uttar Pradesh government has failed to tackle the issue of sugarcane farmers in the state. She raised the issue after a sugarcane farmer committed suicide in the Muzaffarnagar district of Uttar Pradesh.

According to the news report, a cane grower committed suicide by hanging himself from a tree due to non-procurement of his sugarcane produce amid the lockdown.

Priyanka raised the issue on the micro blogging site Twitter. In her tweet, she alleged that the UP government has failed to provide pending cane arrears in time. She said, “Seeing his sugarcane crop drying in the field and not getting the slip, a sugarcane farmer of Muzaffarnagar committed suicide. The BJP claimed that full payment would be given in 14 days, but the sugar mills have been closed with payment due worth thousands of crores.”

Attaching a clipping of a news report with her tweet she said “I had apprised the government two days ago. One can imagine how these sugarcane farmers would be feeling during this financial crisis without getting the payment for their dues. But now the BJP government does not even mention about the sugarcane payment in 14 days.

Recently, former state chief minister and Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav had launched an attack on the ruling government over sugarcane dues. He had alleged that the sugarcane farmers are suffering due to non-payment of their dues by the sugar mills. Replying to the Yadav’s allegation, sugarcane minister Suresh Rana said that during the 38-month tenure of the Yogi Adityanath government, the sugar mills had cleared Rs 98,382 crore of the sugarcane farmers. So far in the current crushing season, sugar mills paid Rs 19,328 crore to the farmers.
