Protest intensifies in Uttar Pradesh over sugarcane dues

Bijnor: Sugarcane farmers from Bijnor district have been protesting at district collectorate for pending sugarcane arrears from last 15 days. On Tuesday, farmers gathered under the leadership of Sardar VM Singh, president of Rashtriya Kisan Mazdoor Sangathan, at St. Mary’s Crossroad and launched their agitation for pending cane dues.

Addressing the gathering, Singh said, “CM Adityanath is busy in celebrating the birthday of PM Narendra Modi. On this occasion, either pay us our dues or lathicharge us to drive away from collectorate. We will not disperse till we get our pending arrears. Farmers know that they have to fight for their dues against government and millers.”

To pacify the situation, the government officials met the agitating farmers in the collectorate premises and informed that the government has initiated action against the millers that have not paid cane arrears.

Reacting on the assurance, Singh said, “The action will not benefit farmers, and they want the pending arrears with interest.”

There are as many as 3 lakh cane producing farmers in the district. Out of nine mills in the district, six mills are yet to pay arrears around Rs 400 crore.

Keeping in view the delay in the payment clearing process, the CM Yogi Adityanath strictly instructed the officials that all the dues of cane growers should be paid by August 31. But, still, sugar mills citing financial scarcity failed to clear the cane dues.
