Punjab aims to increase sugarcane production per acre

Chandigarh: State government has set a target to increase sugarcane production to 100 quintals per acre in the next two years, said Harpal Singh Cheema, state Co-operation and Finance Minister.

Cheema said, “The cooperative sugar mills in the state have crushed 1.72 crore quintals of sugarcane during the 2021-22 crushing season which is 20 lakh quintals more than the preceding crushing season.”

“Compared to last season, the cooperative sugar mills have extracted 0.26% more sugar this season which is expected to generate additional revenue of Rs 16 crore,” he further added.

The state government under the leadership of Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann is committed to the welfare of sugarcane farmers and as per his directions we are setting out a plan to increase the sugarcane output in the next two years that would increase the income per acre by about Rs 36,000, said the minister.

The government has set up a task force comprising representatives from Punjab Agricultural University, Ludhiana, Indian Council of Agricultural Research, Sugarcane Breeding Institute, Coimbatore, and sugarcane experts apart from Sugarfed that will work on a plan to increase the income of sugarcane farmers.
