Punjab CM to meet agitating sugarcane farmers today

Chandigarh: Chief Minister Capt. Amarinder Singh will meet the farmers agitating for the hike in state assured price (SAP) and release of pending cane dues worth Rs 160 crore.

The meeting is scheduled to be held at Punjab Bhawan, Chandigarh.
Supporting the agitation, Congress leader Navjot Singh Sidhu tweeted, “The sugarcane farmers issue needs to be immediately resolved amicably …. Strange that despite the higher cost of cultivation in Punjab the state assured price is too low as compared to Haryana / UP / Uttarakhand. As torchbearer of agriculture, the Punjab SAP should be better!”

The government on August 19 had increased SAP for sugarcane by Rs 15 per quintal but the farmers rejected this move. The meeting between farmers and the cooperation minister Sukhjinder Singh Randhawa concluded without any outcome on Monday.

Farmers are getting support from opposition parties like Shiromani Akali Dal and Aam Aadmi Party that are also demanding a hike in SAP for sugarcane.
