Chandigarh: Following a 90-minute discussion with farm leaders, Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann declared the meeting on Friday as “successful.” While the specific State Advised Price (SAP) for sugarcane was not disclosed, Mann indicated that a meeting with sugar mill owners was scheduled for Saturday, reported Tribune India.
The participation of six private sugar mills, responsible for processing 70% of cane in Punjab, is crucial for any SAP increase. The state government had initially proposed an increment in SAP from Rs 380 per quintal to Rs 388 per quintal.
Addressing the contentious issue of stubble burning and the blame placed on Punjab, Mann called on Prime Minister Modi to take the lead. He suggested convening a meeting with representatives from all north Indian states to collectively devise a solution. Emphasizing that stubble burning is a widespread problem extending beyond Punjab, Mann highlighted its prevalence in central states like Madhya Pradesh.
