Punjab: Demand to release cane dues

Ludhiana: Amid lockdown, Bharti Kisan Union Lakhowal (BKU) has demanded relief for sugarcane farmers. According to The Tribune, diverting Punjab government’s attention, BKU has said that arrears of sugarcane sold to sugar factories, worth crores (to be paid by the government) are immediately released and subsidy due to the farmers on account of sale of sugarcane to sugar mills are paid without any further delay.

Also, earlier, former Union Minister Jitin Prasada demanded that the government should order mills to clear the outstanding cane dues of the farmers in Uttar Pradesh.

In a tweet, he had stated, “At present, the country is fighting against Corona and sugar mills have yet not paid sugarcane dues to farmers. The government should order the sugar mill owners to pay the entire dues in a week.”

In a relief to farmers amid lockdown, recently, the Government has extended the benefit of 2% Interest Subvention (IS) to Banks and 3% Prompt Repayment Incentive (PRI) to all farmers upto 31st May, 2020 for all crop loans upto Rs.3 lakh given by banks which have become due or are becoming due between 1st March, 2020 and 31st May, 2020.
