Punjab: Farmers demand cane arrears before commencement of sugarcane crushing season

Jalandhar, Punjab: Ahead of the commencement of S]sugarcane crushing season in Punjab, cane growers demand pending cane arrears. According to the media report published in Indianexpress.com, sugarcane farmers are still awaiting Rs 300 crore cane dues from sugar mills. Out of which, Rs 127 crore and Rs 205 crore are to be paid by co-operative sugar mills and private sugar mills, respectively.

Most of the sugar mills in the state say that they are unable to pay the State Agreed Price (SAP) of Rs 310 per quintal and want to pay the Fair Remunerative Price (FRP) of Rs 275 per quintal. Recently, keeping in view the interest of cane growers, the Cabinet approved a hike in the FRP of sugarcane for sugar season 2020-21 at Rs 285 per quintal for a basic recovery rate of 10 per cent.

The state government claims that they are making all possible efforts to ensure sugar mills clear cane dues.
