Mukerian, Punjab: Sugarcane farmers under the banner of various farm unions organised a chakka jam in Mukerian demanding the starting of crushing operations by the sugar mills, reports Tribune India.
Farmer leaders said that the government promised to start private sugar mills on November 5 but nothing has been done in this regard and they are forced to come to the streets and launch an agitation demanding the start of the mills.
“If the government was serious on farmers’ issues, then it would have issued notices to the mills to start crushing operations on time,” they said.
