Jalandhar (Punjab): Farmers’ groups in Punjab have rejected the state government’s decision to increase the price of sugarcane by Rs 11 per quintal, deeming it insufficient. In protest, farmers blocked the Jalandhar-Pathankot-Jammu National Highway in Mukerian on Friday afternoon.
While farmers opened one side of the highway during the night, they continued to occupy the other side.
Assistant Director General of Police (ADGP) Jakarran Singh convened a meeting with approximately a dozen leaders from various farm groups to gather their feedback and engage in negotiations.
“We informed him that during the CM’s meeting with farm leaders on November 24, it was stated that Haryana had raised the cane price by Rs 14, and Punjab was committed to providing farmers with a more substantial increase. We have urged him to communicate to the CM that a further increase is necessary in the formal announcement,” conveyed Manjit Singh Rai, President of BKU (Doaba), who attended the meeting.
The farm leaders declared their intention to await the formal announcement from the Punjab government on Saturday, following which they would convene a meeting of the Sanyukt Kisan Morcha to determine the next course of action.
