Punjab: Farmers urged to grow sugarcane and other crops

Jalandhar: Punjab’s Horticulture Minister Chetan Singh Jouramajra and Local Bodies Minister Balkar Singh on Friday urged farmers to adopt crop diversification in a big way to increase their income, reported Tribune India.

The Cabinet Ministers underscored that farmers must break away from the traditional paddy-wheat cycle and explore crop diversification on a large scale to double their earnings. They encouraged farmers to consider alternative crops such as sugarcane, pulses, and vegetables, which promise improved productivity and higher returns. Additionally, they highlighted that diversifying crops would not only conserve groundwater but also enhance soil health, contributing to sustainable agriculture practices.

The Cabinet Ministers also announced the government’s commitment to organizing training workshops for farmers to acquaint them with new crop varieties and modern farming techniques, to ensure better returns on their efforts. They acknowledged Punjab’s fertile land and its potential to cultivate a wide range of crops. They further pledged to safeguard this fertile land and the precious groundwater resources.
