Punjab: Phagwara farmers protest over non-payment of sugarcane dues

Phagwara: Farmers in Phagwara, Punjab, are protesting against the non-payment of compensation to flood victims as well as pending cane dues, reported Tribune India.

The protest is being led by the United Farmers’ Front. The farmer leaders have given the administration until September 15 to pay the outstanding sugarcane dues of Rs 43 crore.

They have warned that if the dues are not paid, they will intensify the protest. The farmer leaders have also demanded that the Central and state governments assist the flood-affected farmers and farm laborers.

Addressing media persons, farmer leaders Satnam Singh Sahni, Kirpal Singh Musapur, Gurpal Singh Pala Mauli, Davinder Singh Sandhwa, Kulwinder Singh Kala Atholi, Manjit Singh Lalli, and Iqbal Singh Bains said the flood-affected farmers and farm laborers of Punjab should be assisted by the Central and state governments.

A large number of farmers from across the area are participating in the protest.
