Punjab: Sugarcane farmers demand payment of cane dues and subsidy

Phagwara: Sugarcane growers have voiced grievances, alleging that despite assurances and the state government’s announcement of a Rs 55 per quintal subsidy, they have yet to receive it from the management of Golden Sandhar Sugar Mill, reported Tribune India.

Additionally, concerns were raised regarding the issuance of minimal slips by the mill management to the farmers. These claims were put forth during a meeting of the Bhartiya Kisan Union (Doaba) convened at Gurdwara Shri Sukhchain Sahib on Tuesday, presided over by BKU leader Satnam Singh Sahni. The meeting also featured addresses by Manjit Singh Rai, President of BKU Doaba, Davinder Singh, Senior Vice-President of BKU Doaba, and Harbhajan Singh, Senior Vice-President of BKU Doaba.

Farmer leaders announced plans for a deputation to meet Deputy Commissioner Captain Karnail Singh of Kapurthala soon, seeking administrative intervention to ensure timely issuance of sugarcane slips to farmers by the mill management. Following the meeting, BKU leader Sahni informed the media that the deputation would appeal to the DC to facilitate a meeting with the mill management to address farmers’ issues, including the substantial arrears owed to them.
