Punjab: Sugarcane farmers protest ends after CM’s assurance of ‘Good News’

Chandigarh: Farmers in Jalandhar lifted their four-day protest on Friday after Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann assured them of “good news” in the coming days regarding their demands, including an increase in sugarcane prices, reported Hindustan Times.

The farmers, under the banner of the Samyukt Kisan Morcha (SKM), had blocked a key national highway near Dhanowali village recently to press for their demands. These included a hike in sugarcane assured price from ₹380 to ₹450 per quintal, a single window and counter-payment system at sugar mills, and compensation for sugarcane crop damage due to floods and other factors.

Following a meeting with farmer leaders, Chief Minister Mann assured the farmers that the state government would continue to provide the highest rate to sugarcane cultivators in the state.

“We will continue to give the highest rate to sugarcane cultivators of the state in the coming times too,” Mann said.

The farmers welcomed the assurance and decided to end their protest.
