Punjab to contribute 35-40% wheat to national pool

Bathinda: Punjab is on its way to contributing 35-40% of wheat in the national food grain pool considering the procurement in other states, reports The Times of India.

The Food Corporation of India (FCI) has fixed a target of procurement of 132 lakh metric tonnes (LMT) of wheat for Punjab and the state has surpassed 94% of the target close to 124 LMT. The wheat procurement target for the entire country has been fixed at 3,415 LMT.

Since the last 14 years, Punjab has contributed 30%-50% to the national pool. IN 2021-22, it contributed 132.22 LMT which was 30.5% and in 2022-23 it contributed a maximum of 51.32%.

The wheat procurement during the ongoing season has reached 124 LMT while the stats of FCI state that Punjab’s contribution in total wheat procurement of 222.89 LMT was 106.54 LMT, which was 47.79% of the total procurement, till April 30.

Gurvinder Singh, director of the agriculture department said the wheat procurement stats suggest that the crop was least damaged due to recent heat waves and waterlogging.
