New Delhi: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has revised its June rainfall forecast for the country from above normal to below normal. IMD in a release stated that the average June rainfall for the country as a whole is most likely to be below normal.
Rainfall over the country as a whole for the month of June 2024 (till 18th June) was 64.5 mm which was 20% less than its Long Period Average (LPA) of 80.6 mm, according to the IMD.
The monthly rainfall for all India and four homogenous regions for June 2024 is given in the table below:
Onset over Kerala was 2 days before and over northeast India, 6 days before the normal date. Thereafter, the north-ward progress of Monsoon was gradual and it covered entire states of Kerala, Karnataka, Rayalaseema, Goa & Telangana; most parts of South Maharashtra and some parts of South Chhattisgarh, South Odisha; most parts of Sub-Himalayan West Bengal & Sikkim and entire northeastern States by 12th June. Thereafter, monsoon has not progressed and the Northern Limit of Monsoon on 18th June, passes through 20.5°N/60°E, 20.5°N/63°E, 20.5°N/70°E, Navsari, Jalgaon, Amravati, Chandrapur, Bijapur, Sukma, Malkangiri, Vizianagaram, 19.5°N/88°E, 21.5°N/89.5°E, 23°N/89.5°E and Islampur.
“The normal to above normal monthly rainfall is most likely over most areas of the south peninsula India and some areas of Northeast India. Below normal rainfall is most likely over many areas of Northwest & adjoining Central India and some areas of Northeast India. There is no signal by the model over white shaded areas within the land region of the country,” IMD said in release.
