Kolhapur: Swabhimani Shetkari Sanghatana leader and former MP Raju Shetti began his rally ‘Jagar Yatra’ opposing the central government’s plan to allow sugar mills to pay fair and remunerative price (FRP) to cane farmers in three installments.
Shetti launched his rally after visiting Jyotiba temple in Kolhapur district. The yatra will conclude at Phaltan in Satara district on October 15 after travelling through all the sugarcane producing districts.
He said,“The government is planning to implement the ‘Gujarat model’ where farmers are paid FRP in three installments. The farmers’ problems would increase further if they get FRP in installments as they will not be able to pay crop loans and other loans borrowed to purchase fertilizers, seeds and other input activities. They will have to pay more interest on the loan.”
