ISMA calls for faster launch of flex-fuel vehicles to achieve 20 per cent ethanol blending

Indian Sugar Mills Association urged that to achieve 20 per cent ethanol blending by 2025, steps should be taken to ensure that the Flex-Fuel Vehicles (FFVs) is launched in the country soon, reports The Hindu Business Line.

Abinash Verma, Director-General, ISMA made a presentation to the Members of Parliament regarding the ethanol blending programme and how it can be achieved at a fast pace.

Verma said, “India needs FFVs on a priority basis if we want to achieve the target of 20 per cent blending by 2025. They can run on 0 to 100 per cent ethanol or petrol depending on the blending at any level. The demand for ethanol will increase by four times compared to E20 if the FFVs start operating with 80-85 per cent ethanol.”

“The oil marketing companies (OMCs) should increase the ethanol storage capacity considering the increase in the demand for ethanol in the next few years. There is a need for the development of pipelines and a network of Indian Railways to carry 1,016 crore litres of ethanol in three years across the country,” he said.
