Restrictions on sugar exports from Russia will not affect Uzbekistan’s sugar availability: Ministry of Agriculture

The Ministry of Agriculture in Uzbekistan has stated that despite Russia’s forthcoming restrictions on sugar exports, the country’s sugar supply will remain unaffected. Uzbekistan typically consumes between 650,000 and 700,000 tonnes of sugar annually. Notably, its sugar production, led by companies like Angren Shakar and Xorazm Shakar, significantly surpasses domestic requirements, with an annual output exceeding 900,000 tonnes.

These enterprises collectively contribute around 2,100 tonnes of sugar to the market daily, while the average daily sales are 300 tonnes. This production capacity not only meets local demand but also ensures a steady supply amidst international market fluctuations.

The ministry also discussed Uzbekistan’s sugar import dynamics, emphasizing that Brazil and India are the primary sources of sugar raw materials, accounting for 98% of Uzbekistan’s sugar imports, amounting to 762,000 tonnes last year.

To address potential global market shifts, the Ministry of Agriculture confirmed that Uzbekistan maintains a sugar reserve sufficient for four months.

Uzbekistan’s confidence in its sugar supply is underlined by recent reports from Sugar.ru about Russia’s plan to limit sugar exports by August’s end this year.

Earlier reports highlighted a substantial $500 million investment by the Egyptian firm Nile Sugar to enhance sugar production in Uzbekistan’s Jizzakh region.
