Saharanpur: Two sugar mills in the Saharanpur district have closed operations due to a shortage of sugarcane. The mills, Bidwi and Todarpur, had been facing the issue of cane shortage for several days, reported Live Hindustan.
The closure of the mills was announced after informing the farmers in the area. The mills had been reopened after a long time this year, but they faced the problem of low cane availability from the beginning of the crushing season.
The Bidwi sugar mill started operating on November 21, while the Todarpur sugar mill’s crushing season began around October 26.
Ashwani Kumar Mittal, the unit head of the Todarpur sugar mill, said that the mill operated for 111 days this year and crushed 17.82 lakh quintals of sugarcane. The mill produced 1.60 lakh quintals of sugar this season.
The Bidwi sugar mill, on the other hand, operated for only 96 days and crushed 14.56 lakh quintals of sugarcane. It produced 1.33 lakh quintals of sugar this season.
