Ponda, Goa: Sanjivani Sugar Mill in Dharbandora, which has remained inactive for the past three years, has found an alternative source of income by selling fruits and vegetables cultivated on its premises, reports Herald Goa.
According to the media report, the proposed ethanol project however has not fructified after closing of the sugar factory.
With approximately 25 hectares of land, the mill’s newly appointed administrator, Satej Kamat, made the decision to utilize the space for cultivating fruits and vegetables. This initiative has enabled the mill to generate a monthly income of Rs 1.5 lakh.
Various produce, including cucumbers, lady fingers, and chillies, are grown within the premises. The fresh vegetables are sold through a dedicated stall located outside the mill. Additionally, the mill administration is collaborating with the fisheries department to explore pisciculture opportunities in the region.
The government temporarily closed down the mill in 2019-20 due to financial losses.
