Sugarcane juice can now be enjoyed in every season, thanks to scientists at the ICAR- Sugarcane Breeding Institute (SBI) Regional Centre, Karnal, who have developed a powdered form of sugarcane juice. The powder will be packaged in packets, with a shelf life of six months from the date of manufacture.
A unique feature of this product is that it will not only be available in its natural form but also in a lemon-flavored variety. According to the scientists, the powdered sugarcane juice will be rich in nutrients and will soon be available in the market.
Dr. ML chhabra, Head regional Centre SBI, Karnal, explained that the packets of juice powder can be mixed with 200 ml of water to prepare fresh sugarcane juice. This means that sugarcane juice will now be available even off-season. Dr. Chhabra added that the powder was developed by Dr. K. Hari and other scientists at the institute, and the team has been working on this project for a long time. Extensive testing of the product has also been completed.
The scientists have ensured that the powdered juice retains all the essential nutrients, providing an immediate energy boost. Currently, the packets will be available for sale online, but the institute has signed a technology transfer agreement with a private company. This company will soon make the product available in the market for general consumers.
Dr. Chhabra also mentioned that the development of sugarcane juice powder would benefit farmers as well, as it will increase both the demand and price for sugarcane.
