Sugarcane crushing season in Maharashtra comes to an end as all sugar mills have concluded operations. The state has witnessed a dip in sugar production by nearly 22 lakh tonnes in 2022-23 as mills ended operations early.
According to the latest reports by the sugar commissionerate office, 210 sugar mills have participated in the current season. They have produced 105.27 lakh tonnes of sugar (as against 127.53 lakh tonnes in 2021-22) by crushing 1,054.75 lakh tonnes of sugarcane with an average sugar recovery of 9.98 per cent.
In the last season, 199 sugar mills operated, and the crushing season stretched till the first week of June. Sugar recovery in Maharashtra is also diminished by 0.44 per cent in the season 2022-23.
In terms of sugar production, Kolhapur region clinched the top spot by producing 23.54 lakh tonnes of sugar, whereas Nagpur region has bagged the last position by producing a minimum of 3.48 lakh quintals of sugar.
According to the reports, the decline in sugar production is mainly attributed due to untimely rain during September-December last year.
