Sugar production in Maharashtra has crossed 108 lakh tonnes in the 2023-24 season, exceeding the previous season’s output of 105.23 lakh tonnes, according to a report by the state’s sugar commissionerate.
A total of 207 sugar mills participated in crushing operations this season, including 103 cooperative and 104 private mills. So far, 1059.18 lakh tonnes of sugarcane have been crushed, resulting in 1084.73 lakh quintals of sugar production by April 7, 2024.
In comparison, 211 sugar mills had participated in crushing in the previous season, crushing 1053.91 lakh tonnes of sugarcane and producing 1052.38 lakh quintals of sugar.
The current season has also seen 178 sugar mills end crushing operations compared to 211 mills that had stopped by April 7 in the previous season. Additionally, there has been a slight increase in sugar recovery this year. As of April 7, 2024, the sugar recovery rate in the state stands at 10.24%, compared to 10.00% at the same time last year.
