Season 2023-24: Brazil’s CS region registers record sugar production

UNICA in its report said that Brazil’s Centre-South region achieved record levels of sugarcane, sugar, and ethanol production for the 2023-24 season.

During this period, the Centre-South region crushed 654 million metric tonnes of sugarcane, representing a 19% increase from the previous season, thanks to favorable weather conditions throughout crop development and harvesting.

Sugar production reached 42.42 million tonnes, marking a 25% increase, while ethanol output rose by 16%, totaling 33.59 billion liters.

Luciano Rodrigues, UNICA’s director, expressed satisfaction with the results, stating that the season exceeded initial expectations.

Mills concentrated on maximizing sugar production during the season to capitalize on strong international prices, with sugar’s share of cane allocation increased.

As per reports, the notable rise in ethanol production was fueled by the expanded use of corn as a feedstock.

In the second half of March, sugarcane crushing in Brazil’s Centre-South totaled 5.04 million metric tonnes, up 6.5% from the previous year. Sugar production rose by 9% to 183,000 tonnes, and overall ethanol output surged by 37.4% to 528 million liters.
