The sugarcane crushing season has gained momentum in India, although sugar production is still lower compared to the previous season. According to data released by Indian Sugar & Bio-energy Manufacturers Association (ISMA), sugar production till 15th February’2024 in the current 2023-24 SS reached 223.68 lakh tonnes, against 229.37 lakh tonnes produced last year on the corresponding date. Number of operating factories were 505 this year against 502 mills which operated last year on the corresponding date.
In the current season, factories have started closing in Maharashtra and Karnataka. A total of 22 factories have closed across these two states this year against 23 factories closed last year on the corresponding date.
