The sugarcane crushing season of 2023-24 in India has entered its last leg as sugar mills have started ending the operations.
According to data released by Indian Sugar & Bio-energy Manufacturers Association (ISMA), sugar production till 15th March, 2024 in the current 2023-24 season reached 280.79 lakh tonnes, against 282.60 lakh tonnes produced last year on the corresponding date. Number of operating factories were 371 this year against 325 mills which operated last year on the corresponding date.
Overall, 161 factories have closed their crushing operations across the country against 208 closed last year, as of 15th March.
