Season 2023-24: Sugar production in Maharashtra crosses 100 lakh tonnes; 43 mills end operations

Pune: The sugarcane crushing season is in its final phase in Maharashtra, with 43 sugar mills having concluded operations till March 14, compared to 123 mills during the same period in the previous season, according to data from the Sugar Commissionerate.

Sugar recovery has also witnessed a marginal increase this season, standing at 10.14 per cent as of March 14, compared to 9.95 per cent last year.

Of the 207 sugar mills that participated in crushing this season, including 103 cooperative and 104 private mills, a total of 986.52 lakh tonnes of sugarcane have been crushed so far, resulting in the production of 1000.43 lakh quintals (100.04 lakh tonnes) of sugar.

In comparison, 211 mills had crushed 1028.21 lakh tonnes of sugarcane and produced 1023.07 lakh quintals (102.30 lakh tonnes) of sugar in the previous season during the same period.

So far, six sugar mills in the Kolhapur region, 14 in the Solapur region, five in the Pune region, four in the Ahmednagar region, eight in the Chhatrapati Sambhaji Nagar region, and six in the Nanded region have concluded their crushing seasons.
