In Maharashtra, sugarcane crushing is currently ongoing in only 18 sugar mills out of the 200 mills that participated in the 2024-25 season. All mills in the Kolhapur, Solapur and Amravati regions have closed their crushing operations.
According to a report from the Sugar Commissionerate, as of March 23, a total of 182 sugar mills have concluded their operations in Maharashtra. This includes 45 mills in Solapur, 40 mills in Kolhapur, 26 mills in Pune, 25 mills in Nanded, 21 mills in Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar, 22 mills in Ahilyanagar, and 3 mill in the Amravati region. During the same period last season, 141 mills had closed in the state.
Sugar production in Maharashtra for the 2024-25 season has reached 797.48 lakh quintals (around 79.74 lakh tonnes), showing a decline from the 1067.5 lakh quintals produced during the same period last season. As of March 23, statewide mills have crushed 843.33 lakh tonnes of sugarcane, compared to 1046.58 lakh tonnes during the same period last season. The state’s overall sugar recovery rate stands at 9.46%, lower than the 10.2% rate achieved at this time last season.
Industry experts say that mills have ended operations earlier this season due to lower yields and increased crushing capacity.
Sugar production in the state has been lower compared to the previous season due to delays in the start of the crushing season, the diversion of sugar for ethanol production, and a reduction in yield.
