Season 2024-25: India’s sugar production updates by ISMA as of February 15

ISMA (Indian Sugar and Bioenergy Manufacturers Association) has released the sugar production numbers for the ongoing 2024-25 sugar season and emphasizes that the crushing season is progressing as expected, with steady sugar production ensuring uninterrupted supply.

According to the ISMA, sugar production till 15th February, 2025 in the current season reached 197.03 lakh tonnes, against 224.15 lakh tonnes produced last year on the corresponding date. Number of operating factories were 460 this year, against 504 factories which operated last year on the corresponding date.

Following table gives state-wise detail of sugar production this year vis a vis last year:

ISMA in a release stated, “Crush rate in the state of Uttar Pradesh continues to be better than last year so far. Currently, the sucrose percentage in plant cane across the state is also improving and has reached a level comparable to the same period last season. As a result, it is expected to partially offset the lower sugar recovery experienced during the first half of the season, by the end of this season.”

The release mentions that factories is some regions of Maharashtra and Karnataka have started closing. About 58 factories have closed across both states so far, compared to 22 closures during the same period last year. “It is worth noting that some factories in South Karnataka are expected to restart operations during the special season from June / July to September 2025,” the sugar body further added.

ISMA states that as per ethanol supplies upto 31st January, sugar diversion towards ethanol is estimated around 14.1 lac tons against a diversion of around 8.3 lac tons year, i.e almost 70% higher diversion this year, thereby explaining the lower bagging recovery rate this year. However, as per estimations by ISMA, gross sugar recovery for the season after accounting for diversion for the season is expected to be lower by only 0.1% against last year (10.63% this year against 10.73% last year).
