Season 2024-25: Sugar production updates by ISMA till December 15

The sugarcane crushing season in India has gained momentum, with sugar mills in key states beginning their operations.

According to The Indian Sugar & Bio-energy Manufacturers Association (ISMA), sugar production till 15th December, 2024 in the current 2024-25 Sugar Season (SS) reached 61.39 lakh tonnes (LMT), against 74.05 lakh tonnes produced last year on the corresponding date. Number of operating factories were 477 this year, against 496 factories which operated last year on the corresponding date.

Notably, this year sugar factories in Karnataka started late by around 7-12 days while in another major state Maharashtra, mills started late by 15 – 20 days, as compared to last year.

However, despite late start in these major states, number of operating factories and the corresponding crush rate is picking up at a faster rate.

Following table gives state-wise detail of sugar production this year vis a vis last year:

As per ISMA, it may also be noted that this year sugar diversion towards ethanol is estimated to be higher at around 40 LMT against around 21.5 LMT diverted last year.
