Sugar mills have paid a total of Rs 8,126 crore to sugarcane farmers in 2024-25 sugar season, Food Minister Pralhad Joshi informed Lok Sabha on Wednesday. As of December 13, the total cane price payable was Rs 11,141 crore, with Rs 3,015 crore still pending. Karnataka has the highest outstanding dues at Rs 1,405 crore, followed by Uttar Pradesh and Maharashtra.
Joshi credited ongoing policy interventions for the reduction in sugarcane arrears.
For the previous 2023-24 sugar season, of the total cane dues of Rs 1,11,674 crore, around Rs 1,10,399 crore had been paid by December 13, leaving only Rs 1,275 crore outstanding. This effectively cleared 99% of the dues.
