Seasonal workers go on strike for higher wages

Mumbai: As the sugarcane crushing season is approaching, the cane workers and contractors (Seasonal workers) have gone on strike demanding hike in their wages. From Beed district, they migrate to Western Maharashtra and Central Maharashtra to take part in the season.

According to the news report published in Thehindubusinessline.com, Keshav Andhale, former MLA and convener of Gopinath Munde Sugarcane Workers, Transporters and Contractors organization said, “The workers have gone on strike demanding higher wages. The rate of sugar harvesting machine per tonnes works out to Rs 350-400. The workers want the same rate, but the rate being offered is Rs 239 per tonne. The labour contractors also sought a hike in the commission paid to them.”

Also, Swabhimani Shetkari Sanghatana leader Raju Shetti asked sugar mills not to start crushing season till decision on sugarcane rates is taken in sugarcane convention, which is likely to take place soon.
