Mumbai: Sensex ended 623.75 points lower at 36,958.16. Similarly, NSE Nifty ended 183.80 points down at 10,925.85.
RIL, Sun Pharma and PowerGrid were among the top gainers today.
Top losers in the Sensex pack included Yes Bank, M&M, Bajaj Finance, Bharti Airtel, HDFC, Maruti, Tata Steel and L&T.
On the currency front, the Indian rupee was trading 49 paise lower at 71.27 against the US dollar.
The global oil benchmark Brent crude futures were trading 0.51 per cent higher to USD 58.27 per barrel.
