Indian equity markets witnessed bloodbath on start of the week on January 6 amid fears about Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV) weighed on investor sentiment.
Sensex ended 1,258.12 points lower at 77,964.99, whereas Nifty concluded 388.70 points down at 23,616.05.
Biggest Nifty losers included Tata Steel, Trent, Coal India, NTPC and BPCL, while gainers were Apollo Hospitals, Tata Consumer, Titan Company, HCL Technologies.
In the previous season, Sensex closed at 79,223.11 points, down 720.60 points or 0.90 per cent, while Nifty closed at 24,004.75 points, down 183.90 points or 0.76 per cent.
Indian rupee ended 4 paise lower at 85.82 per dollar on Monday versus Friday’s close of 85.78.
