The domestic benchmark indices ended higher on January 05.
Sensex ended 178.58 points higher at 72,026.15, whereas Nifty concluded 52.20 points up at 21,710.80.
Indian rupee ended higher at 83.16 per dollar versus previous close of 83.23.
Top gainers on the Nifty were Adani Ports, L&T, TCS, SBI Life Insurance and LTIMindtree, while losers included Nestle India, Britannia Industries, UPL, Sun Pharma and JSW Steel.
In the previous season, Sensex ended 490.97 points higher at 71,847.57, whereas Nifty concluded 141.25 points up at 21,658.60.
