Mumbai: The BSE Sensex settled 318.18 points lower at 38,897.46. Similarly, Nifty ended 90.60 points down at 11,596.90.
HDFC, Kotak Bank, HDFC Bank and ITC were among the top gainers today rising up to 2.26 per cent.
Top losers in the Sensex pack included Yes Bank, falling up to 12.85 per cent.
On the currency front, the Indian rupee depreciated 12 paise to 68.95 against the US dollar.
The global oil benchmark Brent crude futures were trading 0.33 per cent higher at $63.87 per barrel.
