Shamli: Sugarcane farmers threaten to not celebrate Diwali over unpaid cane dues

Lucknow: Enraged by the prolonged delay in the clearance of cane dues, farmers in Shamli, Uttar Pradesh, have vowed to boycott Diwali festivities. This comes as a collective expression of their frustration over the outstanding payments amounting to over Rs 220 crore, reported The Times of India

The farmers have been holding a relentless protest for over two months outside the sugar mill, demanding the immediate settlement of their dues. Their resolve has been strengthened by the recent solidarity shown by leaders of the Bharatiya Kisan Union (BKU), Rashtriya Lok Dal (RLD), and Samajwadi Party (SP).

RLD president Jayant Chaudhary has accused the government of reneging on its promise to clear cane payments within 14 days. He further pointed out that the mill is legally obligated to pay interest to farmers for delayed payments.
