After visiting the flood ravaged parts of Kolhapur and Sangli and taking into account the “unprecedented” loss caused to agriculture former Union agriculture minister Sharad Pawar demanded a complete loan waiver for farmers. He said that the Government should announce to waive farms loans of cultivators in these western Maharashtra districts and there should be a speedy assessment of the damage caused by the floods to arrive at the adequate compensation amount for the affected people. He also claimed the government machinery is virtually absent in the flood-affected areas.
Pawar said Sangli and Kolhapur districts are part of the major sugarcane belts and the entire crop is under water. Vasantdada Sugar Institute, have formed ten distinct teams of sugar experts, who would visit the flood-affected region after the situation improves. All these experts will look into measures to save the sugarcane crop and wherever the crop has been destroyed, the experts will provide seeds to farmers,” he said.
