Farmers launch protest demanding pending cane dues

Ambala: Sugarcane farmers launched a protest shirtless against the sugar Mill in Ambala over a delay in pending cane dues, reports The Tribune.

Cane growers claim that the sugar mill is yet to clear cane dues of around 80 crore even the crushing season has ended earlier this month.

As per the sugarcane control act, sugar mills must clear cane dues within 14 days of crushing cane.

Raising slogans against the sugar mill, farmers gathered at the grain market and launched a march in support of their demand.

Singara Singh, leader of the agitating farmers said, “After sending our cane for crushing, we are forced to launch protest for cane dues. The sugar mill has completed the crushing season on April 7 but has not paid dues worth Rs 80 crore to the farmers yet. They are only assuring us of clearing dues but are not taking any steps in this regard. We will meet Ambala division Commissioner on May 2 to put forward our demand.”
