Haryana: Sonipat sugar mill clears pending dues of sugarcane farmers

Sonipat, Haryana: Farmers who were waiting for their payments after the conclusion of the crushing season at Sonipat Sugar Mill have received a major relief. The administration of Sonipat Sugar Mill has disbursed Rs 11 crore to farmers’ accounts. With this payment, the mill has fully settled the dues for sugarcane purchased during the 2023-24 crushing season, reported Dainik Tribune.

The crushing season at Sonipat Sugar Mill began in November 2023. Given the rising temperatures, the mill administration aimed to conclude the season by April 20. However, the season officially ended on April 22 due to a “no cane” situation. A significant number of farmers were awaiting their payments after the season ended, which has now been cleared by the mill administration.

For the first time, an advance token booking system was implemented during the 2023-24 crushing season, providing various facilities to farmers. This system allowed farmers to book their sugarcane tokens from home without needing to visit the mill directly. They could monitor their token number online and bring their sugarcane to the mill when their token number was close. This system also eliminated congestion in the mill yard.

“Sonipat Sugar Mill administration bonded with farmers for around 33 lakh quintals of sugarcane. Out of this, the mill crushed 28 lakh quintals, while 100,000 quintals were sent to Gohana. The mill administration has now issued payments to all farmers. Preparations for the new crushing season starting in November are already underway,” said Sanjay Kumar, MD, Sonipat Cooperative Sugar Mill.
