Sugar importers in Sri Lanka have urged the Finance Ministry to remove the controlled price imposed on sugar. They have written a letter in this regard and handed over it to the Finance Minister.
Although the control price is imposed on sugar, the price in the market has increased.
According to the news report published in Dailymirror.lk, the importers claim that they are unable to import sugar due to lack of dollars. Only brown sugar is available in the market and there is a shortage of white sugar.
Nihal Senavirathne, vice president, sugar importers’ association said, “More than 7, 000 metric tons of sugar in 300 plus containers are currently held up at the port.”
