Sri Lanka’s Finance State Minister Ranjith Siyambalapitiya has asserted that sugar must be retailed strictly at the stipulated controlled price, and the Consumer Service Authority is tasked with identifying and taking legal action against those who sell sugar above the regulated price, reported Daily News.
State Minister Siyambalapitiya made these remarks in response to questions posed by journalists following an event held in Ruwanwella on the 7th November, 2023. He went on to emphasize that, despite the imposition of a special commodity tax on sugar to meet state revenue requirements, a maximum retail price has been established for sugar to forestall any unwarranted increase in sugar prices within the country.
Furthermore, he underscored that, unlike previous practices, the same maximum retail price will apply to packaged sugar this time, and stringent measures will be taken to prevent any profiteering from sugar sales.
