Sugar hoarding: Sri Lanka intensifies raids

Colombo: Sri Lankan authorities have found leading companies hoarding sugar at their warehouses.

According to the media report, one such company was Pyramid Wilmar and the President’s Office stated that 6,200 MT of sugar was seized from the warehouse of the company.

The government had yesterday seized 29,900 metric tons of sugar found in warehouses, said Major General N.D.S.P. Niwunhella, the Commissioner General of Essential Services.

Lasantha Alagiyawanna, state Minister of Cooperative Service, Marketing Development and Consumer Protection said that a company registered with BoI has been accused of hoarding sugar and action has been initiated against it.

He said, “The authorities will take stern action against anyone found hoarding sugar irrespective of their registration with BoI.”

The seized sugar will be released to Sathosa outlet from where the consumers can purchase sugar at an affordable rate, Minister further added.
