Despite the increase in domestic sugar production, sugar imports in Kenya witnessed a 21 per cent hike in the first five months of the year as compared with the same period during last year. The local production from the last two months has increased.
Private mills have registered an increase in sugar production as the good yield has resulted in the increase in the supply of the sugarcane by farmers to the millers.
“In order to bridge the local sugar deficit, we have increased sugar import to 1,84,677 tonnes from January-May as against 150,302 tonnes during the same period last year,” informed an official from the directorate.
