Sugar mill fined for water pollution in Bangladesh

Chittagong: Taking strict action against the sugar mills polluting environment, the Department of Environment (DoE) slapped a fine of Tk5 lakh to S Alam Refined Sugar Industries Limited in Chittagong, Bangladesh. Moazzam Hossain, director of DoE imposed the fine on the mill for discharging untreated liquid waste into Karnaphuli River without operating Effluent Treatment Plant (ETP).

The team of DoE’s Chittagong Divisional Laboratory inspected the site on September 11 and found the ETP inoperative. They collected the samples of water from the river after they found that the river water was polluted. The factory was later fined after finding that it did not abide by the rules.
