Sugar mill fraud: Pakistan government begins probe against former PM Nawaz Sharif

Lahore: Controversy over Chaudhry sugar mill case in Pakistan is refusing to die down. In the latest development, the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) begins an investigation against former prime minister Nawaz Sharif in the case.

There is allegation on Sharif that he is involved in the corruption happened in the sugar mill. NAB sent him a questionnaire in jail. Currently, Sharif is serving a seven-year prison term in Panama Papers case.

According to the reports, the telegraphic transfer (TT) from abroad was received by former Pakistan PM in his account whereas NAB also sought details of TT and assets from him.

In January 2018, the government’s financial monitoring unit reported to NAB a huge dubious transaction involving billions of rupees with some foreign investment in the sugar mill.

Sharif’s daughter Maryam Nawaz name was also surfaced in the mill fraud in which she is a major stakeholder. On August 8, she was detained by NAB after she skipped appearance in the case.
As per reports, Maryam failed to provide the required details of foreign investment in the sugar mill.
