Sugar mill land issue: Congress leader assures government will stand by farmers

Shivamogga: Former Minister and Congress leader Kimmane Rathnakar reassured farmers cultivating the land that was previously owned by Tungabhadra Sugar Works in Shivamogga taluk, stating that the State government is committed to supporting them and preventing any eviction, reported The Hindu.

Addressing a press conference in Shivamogga on Monday, Rathnakar acknowledged the concerns of farmers following recent court orders regarding the land formerly belonging to the factory. He emphasized that farmers need not to be worry. The matter has to be settled through court. Rathnakar assured that the government will take appropriate actions in favor of the farmers who have been actively cultivating the land.

The private sugar company had been allotted over 1,400 acres of land on lease for sugarcane cultivation, in addition to purchasing approximately 1,000 acres. However, in the subsequent decades, as the factory ceased operations, residents cultivated many portions of the land. Following recent court orders, the factory has reclaimed the land.
