For the on-going crushing season 2020-21, sugar output in India is estimated to be around 310 lakh Metric Tonnes. The estimated domestic consumption is estimated to be 260 lakh Metric Tonnes. Raosaheb Danve, Minister of Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution informed this in a written reply to a question in the Lok Sabha. He said that till February end, the country has produced 222 lakh Metric Tonnes of Sugar.
He said, “The government has allocated a mill-wise export quota of 60 Lakh Metric Tonnes for exporting the sugar in the current season to reduce the surplus stock of sugar. The government is also encouraging sugar mills to produce ethanol from sugarcane juice, sugar, B-Heavy molasses and sugar syrup to divert excess sugar.”
